“A cracking historical adventure for 9–12-year-olds, with a determined and very likeable protagonist for young readers to root for.”

Short Review
"I've enjoyed a number of the Sir Kaye books over the years, and I've always found them to be well-written, fast-paced, and packed full of the sorts of twist and turns that kids love. The author, Don M. Winn, is a talented writer who seems to know his readership well, offering them exactly what they want—mystery, adventure, and the sort of young, ‘fit for fight’ protagonist they’ll love rooting for. I've often felt the Sir Kaye books would go down particularly well with reluctant boy readers, the writing style being very accessible, not overly descriptive, with plenty of speech, and an underlying humour boys in particular will go for.

"In this very large tome of a book, you will find the original four books in the set, The Knighting of Sir Kaye, The Lost Castle Treasure, Legend of the Forest Beast, and The Eldridge Conspiracy. There are also two novellas, Mystery of the White Knight and Mystery of the King's Shadow, plus a little historical info on subjects such as knights, chivalry, food and even storytelling. And, I must say, it all seems thoughtfully put together and, well, complete.

So, why 4 stars and not 5? Well, to be honest, it’s such a big book (894pp) I’m a little concerned that by presenting the story in this way, it’s lost it’s most important attribute—accessibility. Having worked with A LOT of reluctant boy readers aged 9–12, I can tell you now, it would be almost impossible to get them interested in a book this long. Not a chance! Which is sad, but it’s simply the way it is. But all is not lost. I see on Amazon you can still buy them as individual books. And, who knows, possibly there is the odd 9-year-old that wants to immerse him/herself in an 894-page saga. And if they do, they’ll discover a wonderful world of daring young knights battling the odds, mystery solving and, in a nutshell, saving the day. Now that’s what I call an adventure!
